Being A Practical ‘Prepper’

Around 15 million Americans are actively ‘doomsday prepping’. Sure, that can range from keeping a few cans of beans in the basement to building a solar-powered bomb shelter. The question remains in the back of so many of our minds. What if?

Maybe you’re somewhere in the middle—doomsday curious. What are a few not-so-drastic steps that you can take now to prepare for an unknown future?

1. CASH IS KING We’ve been using money for 5000 years. Before that, we probably bartered. If full-on doomsday comes at us, we may indeed resort back to a system of bartering. If, however, our financial systems hiccup, it’ll be good to have some good ol’ greenbacks around for safe measure. Get a fireproof safe (less than $100) and keep what you can in a secret spot. Having a stash of cash might be helpful too if you misplace a wallet or need a last minute wedding gift!

2. WATER IS LIFE Without food and water, even the luckiest aren’t making it past a week. With water alone, you can still survive up to 2 or 3 months! If you have the space, a cheap and easy thing to do is slowly stock up on gallons of fresh water. Stick ‘em in the corner of the basement, or in a utility closet. And if you’re heading to a campsite, going on a long road trip, or your town is doing some emergency repairs, dig into the reserves!

3. GENERATORS ARE…AWESOME! Most of us are wired into (and dependent on) giant utility networks. Most of us, too, are reliant on electricity for the basic necessities of heat and light. If things go awry in the outside world (including a more imminent temporary power outage), electrical self-sufficiency provides safety and comfort to you and your family. The best part of these suggestions? You’ll reap some of the benefits even if the apocalypse DOESN'T come tomorrow. And regardless, a little comfort goes a long way. Here at West Michigan Generator, we want to help solve problems before they’re problems. Preparing for everything is impossible. Setting yourself up for success now and later? That’s a wise investment.
